Hardback is overall in GOOD condition.

  • Volume displays moderate to pronounced wear to covers, and aging inside.
  • Leather covers feature nice marble design, and display overall edgewear, more to lower edges, and a 1.5" x 2.25" chip on middle of back, that shows board. 
  • Corners are lightly bumped. Upper corners are dry and darkened.
  • Spine features red textblock with gilt, and six gilt bands. 
  • Spine is rubbed with a chip to foot.
  • Binding is overall secure. Front cover is hanging on by a thread.
  • Front fep shows previous owner writing. (See photos)
  • Interior is moderately age-toned, with scattered foxing throughout.
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Textblock edges are toned and foxed, and show remnants of tint. (stippled with green dots)
  • Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.

Augustus von Kotzebue was a German dramatist and writer of the 19th century. Having also worked as a consul in Russia and Germany, he was an important political figure as well as being a controversial writer. His novel Zaida is based on historical facts around the non-fictional character of a Muslim refugee princess of 11th century Spain. 


Includes a preface by the translator. Also includes the play The Beautiful Unknown.
